Memorial Day weekend often means extra family time, cookouts, parks, parades, road trips, and making memories together. While children are busy having fun, it is also a great opportunity to naturally support speech and language development—without worksheets or making it feel like “work.”
At Innovative Therapy Center, our Speech Language Pathologists love helping families find simple ways to turn everyday moments into learning opportunities. The best part? Speech and language practice happens naturally through play, conversation, and shared experiences.
Here are some fun Memorial Day weekend ideas from our SLP team:
Backyard BBQ Vocabulary Fun
Cookouts are packed with opportunities to build vocabulary and communication skills.
Talk about:
Foods: hamburger, hot dog, watermelon, corn, ketchup, grill, picnic
Describing words: hot, cold, juicy, crunchy, sweet, smoky, delicious
Action words: cook, stir, flip, pour, cut, eat, carry
Try asking:
"What do you think will happen next?"
"What food is your favorite and why?"
"Tell me three words to describe this watermelon."
Children learn new vocabulary best when they hear words repeated during real experiences.
Parade Talk = Language Practice
Watching a Memorial Day parade? Turn it into a language activity.
Work on:
• Identifying colors
• Naming vehicles & sounds
• Describing people, specifically community helpers, and uniforms
• Sequencing events
• Predicting what might come next
Examples:
"I see a red fire truck!"
"Who is walking behind the band?"
"What do you think we'll see next?"
Older children can practice more complex language:
"Why do you think communities have Memorial Day parades?"
Speech Sound Treasure Hunt
Take a walk outside and look for words containing your child's target sounds.
Examples:
For S sounds: sun, sidewalk, swing, slide, sandwich
For P sounds: picnic, park, play, pop, purple
For B sounds: ball, bubbles, bird, blue
Challenge children to find and say as many words as possible.
Speech practice feels much easier when it becomes a game.
Road Trip Language Games
Heading out of town?
Skip the tablets for a few minutes and try:
I Spy Categories: Example,"Name foods that start with B"
Would You Rather questions
Rhyming games
Story building: one person starts a story and everyone adds a sentence
These activities build:
✔ vocabulary
✔ listening skills
✔ sentence formulation
✔ turn taking
✔ problem solving
Build Language Through Play
Sidewalk chalk, bubbles, sprinklers, water balloons, and outdoor games can all support communication.
Narrate what your child is doing:
"You are running fast!"
"Wow, that bubble floated high!"
"Ready, set, throw!"
Adding language to play gives children repeated models and opportunities to hear new words.
Remember: Conversation Matters More Than Perfection
Parents sometimes feel pressure to create elaborate activities or “teach” language. The truth is, children learn best through connection.
Simple conversations during everyday moments can have a huge impact.
This Memorial Day weekend, enjoy the fun, slow down, and know that talking, laughing, and playing together are already helping build communication skills.
From our SLP team at Innovative Therapy Center, we hope your family has a safe, meaningful, and memory-filled Memorial Day weekend. ❤️💙
