At Innovative Therapy Center, we believe every voice matters—no matter how it’s expressed. AAC (Augmentative and Alternative Communication) includes tools and strategies that help individuals communicate when speech is difficult or not yet developed. This can look like picture boards, speech-generating devices, eye gaze systems, sign language, or even low-tech communication books.
How Our Team Supports the AAC Journey
Speech-Language Pathologists (SLPs)
Our SLPs lead the evaluation and selection process for AAC systems. They help determine which tools best meet the child’s cognitive, language, and communication needs. They also:
Train families, caregivers, and schools on AAC use
Program and personalize devices
Coach communication partners to encourage carryover across settings
Support language development and vocabulary growth through AAC use
Occupational Therapists (OTs)
Our OTs make sure the AAC system is physically accessible and functional. They:
Assess fine motor, sensory, and visual needs that impact AAC use
Adapt access methods (switches, keyguards, styluses, eye gaze, mounting)
Support positioning, ergonomics, and endurance
Collaborate with SLPs and families for consistent use at home, school, and in the community
Why AAC Matters
AAC is not “a last resort.” Research shows it can increase language development, reduce frustration, and give children the ability to connect, request, share, and learn. For many families, AAC becomes a bridge to independence and confidence.
We’re Here for the Whole Journey
At Innovative Therapy Center, our interdisciplinary approach means families don’t have to navigate AAC alone. From evaluation and device trials to training and ongoing support, our SLPs and OTs work together to help every child find their voice.
If you’re curious about AAC or think your child may benefit, reach out—we’d love to help you explore the options.
