Snow days are magical… until the third snack request, the fifth “I’m bored,” and the moment everyone is climbing the furniture. 🥶The good news? You don’t need worksheets, fancy equipment, or a therapy degree to keep speech, OT, and PT skills moving forward during winter weather.

Here are easy, indoor snow-day activities that feel like play but secretly support your child’s therapy goals.

❄️ Speech & Language: Talk, Play, Repeat

☕ Hot Cocoa Stand (Real or Pretend)

Set up a pretend hot chocolate shop using cups, spoons, and whatever toppings you have on hand.

Targets:

  • Vocabulary (hot/cold, sweet, stir, pour)

  • Following directions (“First pour, then stir”)

  • Asking and answering questions

  • Turn-taking and social language

💡 Bonus: Let your child be the “shop owner” and take your order.

📖 Winter Story Builders

Take turns building a silly winter story:

  • “Once there was a penguin who…”

  • “Then a snowstorm came and…”

  • “In the end, they learned…”

Targets:

  • Sentence expansion

  • Sequencing (beginning, middle, end)

  • Grammar and storytelling

  • Imagination and flexibility

🎲 Roll & Say

Write winter words, sounds, or questions on paper. Roll a dice and say the word that many times or answer that many questions.

Targets:

  • Articulation practice

  • Repetition without boredom

  • Attention and endurance

❄️ Occupational Therapy: Hands Busy, Brains Working

🧤 Mitten Match-Up

Mix up mittens, socks, or gloves and find the matches.

Targets:

  • Visual scanning

  • Matching

  • Fine motor skills

  • Bilateral coordination

💡 Level it up: Clip matches together using clothespins.

✂️ Snowflake Factory

Cut paper snowflakes or rip paper into shapes to decorate windows.

Targets:

  • Hand strength

  • Scissor skills

  • Precision and control

  • Following multi-step directions

🧘 Cozy Calm Corner

Create a “snow day chill zone” with blankets, pillows, and stuffed animals.

Targets:

  • Self-regulation

  • Body awareness

  • Transitions

  • Emotional regulation

💙 Teach breathing: “Smell the cocoa, blow out the snowstorm.”

❄️ Physical Therapy: Move Big Indoors

🐧 Penguin Walks

Waddle across the room with knees bent and arms tucked.

Targets:

  • Balance

  • Core strength

  • Coordination

  • Endurance

❄️ Indoor Snowball Toss

Use rolled socks or soft balls. Toss into laundry baskets, buckets, or boxes.

Targets:

  • Balance and weight shifting

  • Hand-eye coordination

  • Standing tolerance

  • Following directions

💡 Try standing on one foot or stepping to a target before tossing.

🛷 Sled Pulls (Inside!)

Pull a laundry basket with a sibling, stuffed animals, or weighted items.

Targets:

  • Strength

  • Motor planning

  • Whole-body coordination

  • Functional movement

❄️ The Big Picture: Progress Over Perfection

Snow days don’t have to mean lost progress. Even 10–15 minutes of playful movement and communication keeps skills fresh and confidence growing.

At Innovative Therapy Center, we believe therapy should:✔️ Fit into real life✔️ Feel achievable for families✔️ Be fun, functional, and flexible

And remember—therapy doesn’t stop just because school is closed. If weather ever makes travel tricky, we’re always happy to help families stay connected through in-person or virtual options.

❄️ Stay warm, stay playful, and keep moving forward—one snow day at a time.
