Understanding, Supporting, and Empowering Kids at Innovative Therapy Center

At Innovative Therapy Center, we believe that every child deserves to experience their world in a way that feels safe, manageable, and enjoyable. During Sensory Processing Disorder (SPD) Awareness Month, we’re shining a spotlight on the children and families navigating sensory challenges—and the therapists who walk that journey with them.

🌟 What Is Sensory Processing Disorder?

Sensory Processing Disorder occurs when the brain has difficulty receiving, interpreting, or responding to information from the senses. Children with SPD may be over-responsive, under-responsive, or sensory-seeking when it comes to input like sound, touch, movement, light, or taste.

Every child with SPD is unique, but common signs include:

  • Avoiding certain clothing textures, sounds, or environments

  • Meltdowns during grooming, mealtime, or transitions

  • Constant movement, spinning, climbing, or crashing into things

  • Difficulty sitting still, focusing, or regulating emotions

  • Seeking deep pressure or avoiding touch

  • Strong reactions to lights, noise, or crowds

SPD is not bad behavior—it’s the nervous system asking for help.

👐 How Occupational Therapy Helps

Our Occupational Therapists are trained to evaluate sensory needs and create individualized plans that promote regulation, confidence, and participation in daily life.

Support may include:

  • Sensory integration therapy

  • Deep pressure and proprioceptive strategies

  • Visual, tactile, or auditory accommodations

  • Movement-based regulation

  • Environmental and classroom modifications

  • Parent and caregiver coaching

The goal? To help children feel calmer, more organized, and more capable at home, school, and in the community.

🧩 The Power of Collaboration

At Innovative Therapy Center, our OTs also collaborate with Speech-Language Pathologists, Mental Health Counselors, and Feeding Therapists when sensory needs impact:

  • Communication

  • Behavior and emotions

  • Feeding and mealtime participation

  • Social skills

  • Attention and learning

We treat the whole child, not just the symptoms.

💚 Families Are Part of the Process

SPD can feel overwhelming for parents—but you’re not alone. We provide caregiver training, practical strategies for home and school, and ongoing support through every step of the journey.

With the right tools and understanding, kids with SPD can thrive.

🌈 This Month, Let’s Raise Awareness—Not Judgment

SPD Awareness Month gives us the opportunity to:

  • Normalize sensory differences

  • Advocate for early support

  • Celebrate strengths and neurodiversity

  • Equip families with resources and hope

If your child struggles with sensory challenges—or you’re not sure what you’re seeing—our team is here to help with compassion, expertise, and collaboration.
